Bioshock Review

July 1, 2008

Worth $19.99 (What I paid)? : YES!!

Addiction Rating: 8 (out of 10)

What's Good

  • The whole 1960s theme is really awesome
  • Graphics are stunning
  • Enemies are very unusual and have very interesting AI
  • Storyline was the most unique of any video game I've ever played

What's Bad

  • Some parts of the game seem redundant...there's a fair amount of backtracking
  • I'd say about 60% of the genetic enhancements are pretty much useless and could have been left out of the game
  • Walk speed should have been run speed, run speed should have been....much faster

Tips

Don't attack a Big Daddy unless the little girl is with him. Otherwise you go through a huge battle and get no reward. Quick save often...this one killed me a few times. Almost quit the game at one point because of it.

Details

Bioshock is a beautiful game. By far the best part about it is the atmosphere of the gameworld. It feels nothing like any other shooter I've ever played. It would be worth buying the game just to walk through and look around. The characters you will meet and battle in the game are totally bizarre and facinating which is another feature lacking in many shooters these days

Beyond that, the gameplay is nothing too special. I would say the gameplay is typical of most modern day shooters. They tried to do something special with the whole "genetic enhancement" theme, and although it does work wonderfully for the storyline, it isn't that original in terms of gameplay. Every shooter has its own system whether it be "the force", "magic", "spells", or whatever; and Bioshock's genetic enhancements are really no different.

I gave Bioshock an addiction rating of 8/10. I definately enjoyed the entire game, but was satisfied when finished and not really longing for more.
